Help Clean Up and Green Up Fremont

"Clean & Green Seattle" is about working together to make Seattle a brighter, cleaner place—one neighborhood at a time. By connecting neighbors with the city departments, non-profit organizations and private enterprises that can help them, we can make our communities more inviting for everyone to use.  Join your Mayor, Friends, and Neighbors to pick up litter and spruce up green spaces.  Tools will be provided.  Please contact Yun Pitre at 206-684-4054 or yun.pitre@seattle.gov if you would like to volunteer.

Department of Neighborhoods Survey

In an effort to evaluate the Department of Neighborhoods (DON), we are surveying various community members and residents throughout the City of Seattle. Grand Opening of  Fremont Peak Park

November 10, 2007

FremontPeakPark, an art-filled view park, will celebrate its grand opening on Saturday, November 10, fromnoon to3 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting and dedication at 12:30 p.m.

The completed park is the result of six years of combined effort on the part of Friends of Fremont Peak Park, Seattle Parks and Recreation, key donor organizations, and hundreds of individual community members who contributed time and money. Funding sources included the Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund, King County Conservation Futures Fund, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Matching Fund, and many other generous donations.The event will feature music by the Phinney Neighborhood Chorus, a brief ceremony with dedication and speeches, and coffee and cake for all.

Shoreline Master Program Update Open House

The Department of Planning and Development is revising our Shoreline Master Program (SMP). The SMP establishes land use policies to manage the recreational, economic, and ecological resources of Seattle’s marine and freshwater shorelines. The goals of the SMP are to maintain water dependent uses along the waterfront, improve public access, and restore ecological functions. Information on the new state guidelines for SMP updates, and our plan for public participation will be presented at the Open House. Public participation will continue through 2008, with new regulations anticipated in 2009-2010. Free Public Landslide Information Meetings
November 3 and December
1

Have a problem with a steep slope? Learn how to protect yourself and your property at one of two free landslide meetings this fall, sponsored by DPD and Seattle Public Utilities. An annual series, the meetings will provide presentations and individual consultation on best practices for managing landslide prone properties and will be held on Nov. 3 at North Seattle Community College and on Dec. 1 at South Seattle Community College.

Joining City of Seattle staff will be the American Society for Civil Engineers, the Association of Engineering Geologists, the International Society of Arboriculture and Associated Building Contractors. Presentations will include a discussion of the causes of landslides and proper drainage and vegetation for sloping sites. These will be followed by a question and answer session and time for one-on-one discussions. No registration is required. Both meetings will have the same format and information.

Neighbor Appreciation Day Cards are Now Available!

Neighbor Appreciation Day greeting cards are available free to organizations and individuals throughout Seattle. The card is suitable for use throughout the year.  If you would like to send cards to citizens in recognition of their special contributions to their neighborhoods, please contact Peter McGraw at 615-0950 or peter.mcgraw@seattle.gov and let him know how many you need.  They are also available at all Neighborhood Service Centers, Community Centers, Seattle Public Libraries, and City Hall.

Energy and Utility Assistance

Get help with your utility bills!

The City of Seattle's Utility Assistance Program helps eligible low-income families, seniors, and adults with disabilities keep utility payments current. Emergency funds help eligible Seattle City Light and Seattle Public Utilities customers who face electrical and water disconnection. For information, call 206-684-0268.  Interpretation services available.

Small Sparks Community Development Fund is Waiting!  

Do you have ideas for building community that could use up to $250 from the City's Small Sparks program? Small Sparks seeks to bring together new people. The goal is to get new people (e.g. recent immigrants, youth, seniors, and people with disabilities) involved in creative small-scale community building initiatives.  If you have any ideas we would love to hear about them as well as sharing program information with you! Provided by the Seattle Mayor's Office for Senior Citizens (aged 60 and older) is a discount card and directory of businesses and organizations that give discounts and special offers to seniors.

Woodland Park Zoo & Seattle Aquarium Passes

Passes for the Woodland Park Zoo and Seattle Aquarium are available at the NSC. These are only for low-income families and there is a limit of 4 per households.
