Special Election is March 13th- Don't forget to mail in your vote!

Voters will see two advisory measures on the ballot in a Special Election to be held Tuesday, March 13, 2007. Both are Advisory Measures concerning the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Visit King County Election  for information on voter registration and advisory ballot measures.

COMMUNITY ARTS : MAYOR'S ARTS AWARDS

2007 Mayor's Arts Awards Nominations open
Know an individual or organization making a difference in Seattle's communities through arts and culture? Nominate them for a 2007 Mayor's Arts Award. Mayor Greg Nickels will present the awards at a ceremony, Friday, Aug. 31 at Seattle Center in partnership with Bumbershoot®: Seattle's Music & Arts Festival.  Nomination deadline is Monday, April 9, 2007. Request for Proposal(RFP) for Take Action: Healthy People, Places, and Practices in Communities Project

Through the Take Action: Healthy People, Places, and Practices in Communities Project, the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) and the Regional Health Administrators (RHAs) are seeking community-based groups to develop, carry out, and evaluate a unique set of activities in local settings that support the President’s HealthierUS initiative to promote and sustain healthy lifestyles in communities.  Proposals are due March 30, 2007.

 

FUNDING INFORMATION

  • Up to 270 projects will be funded.  Recipients will be geographically diverse, and projects will represent a variety of Healthier US-relevant activities.
  • Only one proposal per organization will be considered for funding.
  • Projects will cover the periodJuly 1, 2007 to June 30, 2008.
  • This is a one-time funding opportunity.
  • Each project budget will range from $2,000-$5,000 for the project period.

WHO CAN APPLY

Not-for-profit, community-based organizations, including faith-based groups, after-school programs, coalitions and others can apply for these funds.  Preference will be given to small organizations with budgets less than $750,000.  Projects that focus on eliminating health disparities are encouraged . 

   

TYPES OF ACTIVITIES TO BE FUN DED

Proposed projects must include or promote at least one of the following types of activities:         

·        Physical activity

·        Nutrition/healthy eating

·        Preventive screenings

·        Making healthy choices/avoiding risky behaviors

 

EXAMPLES OF POSSIBLE PROJECTS INCUDE:

·        Walking programs for a neighborhood or workplace.

·        School lunch programs that include locally grown, seasonal fruits and vegetables.

·        Skin cancer detection programs.

·        Smoking prevention programs for teens.

Technology Matching Fund Available

Once a year, the City awards funds to Seattle organizations to support the growth of a technology-healthy community through the Bill Wright Technology Matching Fund. The fund supports projects that reach technology underserved communities to address one or more of the following goals: 1) to increase technology literacy and access; 2) to provide residents with access to computers, the Internet and other information technology; and 3) to increase residents' use of technology for civic engagement and democratic participation.

The fund is currently seeking applications for the 2007 grant round. The deadline is Wednesday, March 7, 2007 at 5:00pm. The application and guidelines are available at Community Technology or at your Neighborhood Service Centers. The fund will award grants up to $20,000 from a total fund of $150,000.

Free tax assistance at The Seattle Public Library

Several Seattle Public Libraries will offer free tax assistance from January to April. Trained volunteers will be available to prepare simple personal tax returns. The service is not available for business tax returns, tax returns involving stock or real estate transactions, or other complicated returns.

Tax forms and publications are not available at all locations. Please call before visiting to confirm availability. For more information, visit Seattle Public library . Users may download most forms and publications from the IRS Web site .

The City of Seattle's Utility Assistance Program helps eligible low-income families, seniors, and adults with disabilities keep utility payments current. Emergency funds help eligible Seattle City Light and Seattle Public Utilities customers who face electrical and water disconnection. For information, call 206-684-0268.  Interpretation services available.
